Renewing the Patriot Act While America Sleeps

Click Here to Read John Whitehead's Commentary

Dear sirs,

I enjoyed Mr. Whitehead's commentary, but it comes as too little, too late. The America in which I was born and grew up is gone and it is not coming back.

As a physician-researcher (often for military and government projects) turned businessman, I have witnessed first-hand the stunningly rapid increase in data collection on ordinary Americans. As a frequent traveler abroad I also have experienced first-hand the abusive behavior by TSA and Customs officials, including extensive searches of me, my luggage, computer files and other personal items. On one occasion at Boston's Logan Airport, I was detained in a small room for interrogation for over 3 hours as my luggage, clothes, phone and computer were quite literally taken apart in front of me - while four armed Customs officers shouted insults at me and accused me of numerous crimes. During this particular episode I was told that I was required by law to answer all questions; was not allowed to call my attorney or anyone else; was told I could be detained indefinitely; was falsely accused of verbally threatening a Customs officer; was handcuffed and repeatedly threatened with arrest for asserting and maintaining my right to remain silent; and my audio recording of the event on a second phone was erased and over-written by these officers. Subsequently, I have been "randomly selected" for Customs searches literally every time I re-entered the U.S.

The United States will never be what it was. Therefore, I chose to leave the U.S. to live permanently in Europe. I am not alone. I have encountered many American expatriates here, who like myself, discovered the only hurdle was transferring our businesses and assets overseas. Since we bring businesses and create jobs, we all have been welcomed by the governments here. At least here they make no pretense of living in freedom under an enforceable Constitution and Bill of Rights. I think it was Thomas Paine who wrote, “It is the duty of the patriot to protect his country from its government.” Unfortunately, anyone in the U.S. expressing that opinion today is placed on a "terrorist watch" list.

Mr. Whitehead expressed some fine sentiments in his article, but they are too little, too late.

Rutherford Institute Sues Town Over First Amendment Violation After Homeowners Were Ordered to Remove Thomas Jefferson Sign From Yard

Do you think there is a certain irony in suing a city for baning a sign that says bind the government to its constitution, using an amendment to the federal constitution that is supposed to bind the central government? Are you not asking the central government to slip it's bonds and pretend that it has the power to apply restrictions meant for it to cities? In the name of freedom of speech you undoing the very thing that Jefferson argued against. This is granting legitimacy to illegitimacy. You are using the Mafia to kill a cockroach. Does the Constitution of Iowa have a provision restricting its cities from infringing on free speech?

The boys located at Versaille on the Potomac want to control the internet. They know that if they bring back the "fairness doctrine"
the internet will explode. If they can get control of the internet, they can slide in the Fairness Doctrine and shut down free speech. Where in the hell is the ACLU on these issues?
This flies in the face of everything they are supposed to stand for.

I faithfully read the right side of news on a daily basis. Your article today was dead on, please keep the news coming!
THANKS!

I don't know that free speech means interupting the proceedings of a deliberative body. I have been on a school board, and there was a time and place for public comment. During a session of congress, does not seem like the time and place. It does not seem like this particular speech was singled out, just any speech from the audience at that time.

Charges Dropped Against Student Arrested for Removing Shirt, Displaying Text of 4th Amendment in Protest of Airport Scanners

John:

I don't agree with this. Our airports must be kept safe. Traveling on planes is not a right. This type of disturbance and distraction will open the door for more like Mohammed Atta and the like.

I so enjoy your commentaries and anything else I receive from The Rutherford Institute. I am 66, a woman. My husband of 81 and I are too old to fight, he fought in WWII for the freedoms that are now very obviously being taken one by one under a guise of being done for "our safety and security, defense, etc".

Everything you write about is oh so right! But please, do you know why America is not moving?
Young America is not standing up! A few..one here and one there. One individual can be stomped out and disappear and would soon be dropped from the news.

But crowds! Where are the crowds of disgruntled Americans demanding real change back to the morals and disciplines of a generation ago! Freedoms, civil rights all guaranteed under the constitution are now being judged wrong by the judges of today.

Anyway, sir. Thank you for the work you do and the hope you provide individuals who are caught in the legal battles related to these trying times..

I will die for my Jesus, gladly. I doubt that I would willingly die for my country anymore because it is no longer "my" country. God help us all. May he come swiftly.

I wish I could offer more than my prayers for your continued successes.

Blessings

Bonnie

Elvis Presley: Down Lonely Street at the Heartbreak Hotel

yes, John - in so many ways, he was a metaphor for the generation. it's all about keeping that early spirit alive - the QUEST, not the indulgence that "success" allows for so many.

and not to mention - his "handler" Colonel Tom, who controlled his every business move, and prevented him from taking on challenges that might have inspired him (like the movie with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristopherson - where Elvis was the first pick for the male lead - can't think of name).

important point you are making here - for everyone. like you, i LOVED him when he first started out - up till 1978 - but even then, he was essentially "spoiled"
