yes, John - in so many ways, he was a metaphor for the generation. it's all about keeping that early spirit alive - the QUEST, not the indulgence that "success" allows for so many.

and not to mention - his "handler" Colonel Tom, who controlled his every business move, and prevented him from taking on challenges that might have inspired him (like the movie with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristopherson - where Elvis was the first pick for the male lead - can't think of name).

important point you are making here - for everyone. like you, i LOVED him when he first started out - up till 1978 - but even then, he was essentially "spoiled"
